The Commission was formed to address issues of Muslims living in the United Kingdom in the light of Islamic law.
Members of the Commission are qualified Scholars from the UK and also enjoys a direct link with renowned scholars from the Muslim World and credible Muslim organizations.
The purpose of the Commission is to guide Muslims in the UK through fatwa (edict) according to the Qur'an and Sunnah, and also with a localized understanding of the community, in matters related to their religion and to help resolve family, inheritance and other issues.
To be of assistance to Muslims in the UK by:
Helping and assisting the Muslim community in the UK to understand and practice their religion according to the teaching of the Book of Allah (Qur'an) and the teachings of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).
Providing Advice and addressing issues related to Muslim family life.
Forming a committee of highly qualified scholars to study, revise and decide in issues related to Muslim Family Law.
Promoting engagement between the Muslim community and other communities for the common good.

The Commission only deals with the Islamic aspect of a Muslim's life, such as Marriages, Divorces and Inheritance issues and also answers questions related to religion, and does so through fatwa.
The Commission does not intervene in civil legal issues, which should always be dealt with by British Courts, including marriage contracts and other legal matters.
The Commission does not conduct cases as part of the UK legal or judicial systems and does not provide legal advice Legal advice should be sought from qualified legal professionals
The Commission is a Welfare and Non-profit making Charity.
The remit of the Commission is as follows:
The Commission shall exclusively provide advice and services that pertain solely to Sharia law (Islamic law).
The Commission and its esteemed panel members are not permitted to extend their advice or services to matters that intersect with the laws of England and Wales. Consequently, the following matters fall under the jurisdiction of the laws of England and Wales:
1. Financial relief or any financial matters governed by the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 or TOLATA 1996.
2. Child-related issues, including contact, residence, and other matters concerning the children of the marriage, governed by the Children Act 1989.
